Dee Vitello (left) and 101-year-old Mildred Wharton, regular participants in the Stark County (Ohio) District Library’s Knitty Gritters Knitting Club, examine scarves and hats created for the Lake Community branch’s 5th annual Stitch for the Cure scarf drive, held during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. The library invites knitters, crocheters, weavers, and stitchers to display scarves in any shade of pink during the month. In 2008, the program’s first year, participants created 43 scarves; this year they generated 70 (plus a dozen hats), all of which will be donated to local breast cancer centers. At a reception on November 5, Jodie Hawkins, program organizer and adult programmer for the library, said, “This has been a very fulfilling project. Each year I get thank-you notes from people who have received the scarves we create.”
