CraftCon knitting session

The two most incredible things I saw today happened in the Networking Uncommons. I suggested to Andromeda Yelton, creator of the CodeYear Connect community (connect.ala.org/codeyear), that she look into creating a LITA IG (www.ala.org/lita/involve/igs) related to the group. Two hours later, she had a printed petition, a cochair, several signatures, and an idea for a preconference. The group is having a meetup Monday from 10 to noon in the Networking Uncommons—bring your programming questions or your curiosity and hang out with like minds!

The other event I headed to the Uncommons for was the CraftCon knitting session. Organized by Kate Kosturski (connect.ala.org/user/53546)  (see video), the session spun out (ha ha) to two hours, and at one point involved more than a dozen people cross-stitching, knitting, and crocheting and enthusiastically talking about their crafts and about staging a CraftCon (connect.ala.org/node/132186) at Annual Conference 2012 in Anaheim.

I love all the energy I saw today! People making new connections, new friends, and new things inside and outside their professional organization. What else is an organization like ALA for but to bring its members together, exactly in this way? :)

And a LITA plug before I go: In tomorrow’s Town Meeting, we are going to have three topics for the room to discuss:

  • what is the value that participation in professional associations in general and LITA in particular provide;
  • how LITA can provide support for developing leadership skills in emerging technology leaders;
  • where and how should LITA provide support for development of technology skills?
The discussions will be streamed live, and we will be using chat in the LITA ALA Connect group for people not in the room to participate virtually. See the LITA blog for details (litablog.org/2012/01/town-meeting-monday-please-join-us-online-or-in-dallas/).
