The Impact of No Impact Man

“I don’t know what truth is. Truth is something unattainable. We can’t think we’re creating truth with a camera. But what we can do, is reveal something to viewers that allows them to discover their own truth.” –Michel Brault, cinematographer, cameraman, film director, screenwriter and film producer

I could not agree more. Over the years, I have seen many extraordinary films that have touched me and helped me see my own truth.

Recently, I had the pleasure of seeing the documentary No Impact Man at my local theater. The film was a reflection on the impact food production has on climate change and what one family did to take action over a one-year period.

It was sponsored, in partnership with two community groups, by my local library. The small theater was packed and the crowd hungry to see this 90-minute documentary that so many people have been talking about lately. By the applause at the end, I believe no one was disappointed.

I envision many conversations taking place that night in the homes of these library patrons after seeing this intelligent, provocative, and oftentimes funny film. And the one question they were asking themselves: “What can we do to make a difference?”

2010 marks the 40th anniversary of Earth Day. During the week of Earth Day 2010 (April 18–25), the No Impact Project, Slow Food USA, and 1Sky is offering screening rights and a toolkit to help groups plan and execute a community screening event for $50.
