Green Roof

Though I’ve always resided in the Chicago area, I frequented Milwaukee when I was young as my aunt and uncle lived there. A short distance from Chicago, I plan on going back again this year to take in a Milwaukee Brewers baseball game where I can enjoy an eco-friendly veggie dog and make a stop at the historic Milwaukee Public Library (Wis) to check out its 30,000-square-foot green roof.

The roof’s webcam allows visitors and patrons to view its layout and all the wonderful green things growing. Though well-established in Europe, green roofs are just beginning to catch on in North America.

To read more about the many benefits of a green roof and to locate an accredited green roof professional in your area, visit GreenRoofs for Healthy Cities. (GRHC also has a GreenSave Calculator to compare life-cycle costs of various roof options, but sadly it lies behind a members-only paywall.)

Does your library have a green roof or are you planning to put one in? Do tell. Share your thoughts and enthusiasm for this green option in the comments area so that others may benefit from your experience.

Green Roofing in NYC

Although not on a library specifically, Greensulate installed Green Roofs on two schools in Manhattan this summer totaling 34,000 sq ft.  For some great pictures, check out www.greensulate.com.  This is great to hear, and hopefully we will install some library roofs this year!

Gary,

Thanks for the travel tip and green roof resources!

Green on the Roof

Hello, Greetings from DC.

While I live here now once a Chicagoan always a Chicagoan and also like you we would make frequent daytrips to Milwaukee. In fact, these days when we fly to see relatives in Chicago who live north of the city. We fly into Milwaukee. It’s cheaper and you’re out of the airport and your rental car in about 10 minutes. That’s impossible at O’Hare.

I’m writing re: Green Roofs.

This Science Tracer Bullet from the Library of Congress might be of interest. It’s right on topic. I believe it was last reviewed in 2009.
