PHILADELPHIA — The Association of Library Trustees, Advocates, Friends and Foundations (ALTAFF), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), has awarded the 2012 LexisNexis Outstanding Friend Conference Grant to Mary Alicia McRae, secretary of the Friends of the Salinas (Calif.) Public Libraries. McRae will receive $850 plus full conference registration to attend the 2012 ALA Annual Conference June 21-26 in Anaheim, Calif. A formal presentation to McRae will be made at the conference.
McRae is the secretary of the Friends of the Salinas Public Libraries, of which she has been a member since 2009. A former literacy specialist and teacher, she applied for and received a $20,000 grant for a library homework center. With these monies, the library has been able to employ five local college students to assist elementary students with homework after school in an underprivileged area of East Salinas. McRae also applied for and won a grant from the Community Foundation of Monterey for funds to pay for advertising the opening of the first-ever Friends’ Corner Bookshop.
"Assisting public libraries is a privilege," says McRae. "Here in Salinas, where our libraries were almost completely closed down in 2007, we take great pride in coming from the ashes into a living, breathing, community resource. Our citizens have voted for a 10-year tax that supports the libraries and other community services. Now the Friends are there to help fulfill the promise our libraries offer."
“Without institutional support, Friends of the Library members are rarely able to afford registration and travel to conferences,” says ALTAFF Executive Director Sally Gardner Reed. “We are very grateful to LexisNexis for making this opportunity possible.”
The LexisNexis Outstanding Friend Conference Grant enables a person who is active in his or her local Friends of the Library group to attend ALA Annual Conference. The Conference Grant, made possible by a gift from LexisNexis, is administered by ALTAFF. For more information, visit www.ala.org/altaff/grants_awards/friends/lexisnexis.
