CHICAGO – As August hits and the temperature rises, the place to spend quality family time and cool off is @ your library.
Here are a few examples of what libraries are doing to create cost-effective and entertaining family programs for library users this summer.
Students in grades 4 to 8 are invited to cool off at the Skokie (Ill.) Public Library’s Kids Swim! in the Digital Media Lab. As part of the library’s This summer @ your library promotions, Kids Swim! in the Digital Media Lab invites kids to learn how to make music, videos and computer animations.
To promote the library as a cost-effective way for people of all ages to explore the world, the Carteret County (N.C.) Public Libraries recently created a new promotional video titled "Summer Reading Program @ your library." Hosted on YouTube, an embedded video is queued to greet visitors to the library’s website.
The Tuscarawas County (Ohio) Public Library System encourages area residents to visit the library with Win Big @ your library. Children who attend programs or participate in the system’s summer reading program will be entered to win one of five new bikes. Adults and teens who check out books or attend programs will be entered into an additional drawing for two NOOK Color™ eReaders.
Every Thursday, the Skillwater (Okla.) Public Library hosts Summer Cinema @ your library, a double feature of family-friendly movies. Additional art, theatrical, science and sports programs will take place throughout the summer.
Encourage parents in your community to check out the American Library Association’s (ALA) new Connect with your kids @ your library Family Activity Guide. The guide offers additional ideas on how parents can spend quality time with their kids this summer using the resources at your library.
To download the family activity guide and a bookmark template at no charge, visit ALA’s public awareness website, atyourlibrary.org/connectwithyourkids/for-librarians.
The Campaign for America's Libraries is ALA’s public awareness campaign that promotes the value of libraries and librarians. Thousands of libraries of all types – across the country and around the globe - use the Campaign’s @ your library® brand. The Campaign is made possible in part by ALA’s Library Champions, corporations and foundations.
