Google Wallet announcement
Submitted by Jason Griffey on Thu, 05/26/2011 - 15:24
Today Google announced a new feature, the Google Wallet for near field communication devices. Similar to MasterCard’s PayPass (and compatible with it), it will allow you to simply wave your phone to authorize payment at merchants, including RadioShack, Subway, Foot Locker, CVS, and more.
Can you see libraries taking overdue and lost payments with something like this?

Not just for fines...
I’m intrigued by this line: “Someday, even things like boarding passes, tickets, ID and keys could be stored in Google Wallet.” Hopefully we can add library cards into that mix.
A number of libraries are already taking card information off of barcode apps like KeyRing, and NFC already shares a protocol with existing RFID scanners. I’m guessing that this could be a pretty easy leap for many organizations.
