The Kno Textbook App Hits The iPad:

The former tablet manufacturer Kno released its iPad app last night, giving the iPad the largest collection of textbooks yet seen on the platform. It will be very interesting to see if schools respond to this availability, and if the textbooks in question are up to date/popular.

Thats it?

2 sentences? Come on, you can do better than that. Did you download the app? Maybe read the TOS? Yea, start with the TOS - that would make a good article.

Given that...

Given that the app has been out 2 days and it's a Sunday night at 10:20pm…well, yeah, 2 sentences about does it. :-)

I did read the TOS, and while the "we own everything you do" clause is certainly draconian, it's hardly noteworthy in the current IP environment. While some web services have recently come under attach for their IP policies (twitpic comes to mind), I'll be curious to see if there is any uproar about Kno owning/licensing/controlling the notes that people take in their textbooks.

Perpetual Beta is sometimes about articles, but most of the time it's about pointing people at interesting news items that might escape their notice. It's a human-filtered news source focused on tech that should be of interest to libraries and/or librarians.

I hope that helps. :-)

Many thanks!

Thanks @griffey. I downloaded the app as well. Hope to hear what you think about how the pricing appears to work (rent/buy) and if the discounts are real compared to options from other vendors (e.g. print/ebook-kindle etc.). I think the only option via the web (rent with expiration date) could be a problem for some students.
