The hashtag system used by various social media sites – wherein either words or concatenated words are prefaced with a # – is implemented as a means to maintain search result optimization. It is a form of metadata – made popular by Web 2.0 sites – that helps more specifically identify an item, so that it’s easier to find within the ever-growing cloud.

The report attests that 66% of those who utilized their search engine on May 1 to find an answer to this question were between the ages of 13 and 17.
