Ex-Archivist Sentenced for Document Theft

A former archivist with the National Archives and Records Administration in Philadelphia was sentenced July 31 to 21 months in prison for the theft of historical documents from the archives between 1996 and 1999. Shawn P. Aubitz, who pleaded guilty in March, was also ordered by U.S. District Judge Jan E. DuBois to pay $73,793 in restitution, according to an August 2 Associated Press report.

Aubitz told the court that he has “a mental illness, a compulsive need to amass collections for self-esteem and approval.” However, he admitted to selling the documents to pay off personal expenses and credit-card debt.

The stolen items included 64 presidential pardons and 316 autographed photos of Apollo astronauts.
