Children’s author and former children’s librarian Beverly Cleary died March 25 in Carmel, California, her publisher HarperCollins said. She was 104 years old. Mouse, and the irascible Ramona Quimby—once said her early dream of writing for children was rekindled when “a little boy faced me rather ferociously across the circulation desk and said: ‘Where are the books about kids like us?’” Also: New York Public Library picks its top five Cleary books.
