The University of Minnesota’s Kerlan Collection of children’s literature exhibit, “The ABC of It,” launched on February 11, has come under fire for its inclusion of such problematic authors as Dr. Seuss, Carol Ryrie Brink, and L. Frank Baum. Several children’s book authors criticized the exhibit during a March 6 panel for being neither representative nor inclusive. Curator Lisa Von Drasek added explanatory signage to some items in the exhibit, as well as more diverse bibliographies of additional reading. University of Minnesota Libraries also announced that a panel discussion on racism in children’s literature is being organized in tandem with the exhibit, although a date has not yet been scheduled.
