July 12 is National Summer Learning Day. Here are some summer reading stats: 95% of libraries offer summer reading programs, according to ALA’s 2014 Digital Inclusion Survey. In 1895, Linda Eastman created the Cleveland Children’s Library League, a children’s reading program that was the precursor to summer reading programs all over the world. Children who participated in the Chicago Public Library’s Summer Learning Challenge in 2017 had 15–20% gains in reading and math test scores, compared with peers who did not.
