The Rye (N.Y.) Free Reading Room, the public library in this small Westchester County community, has indefinitely postponed its drag queen story hour, which has received homophobic coverage in a local newspaper. The event was scheduled to take place February 8, but Library Director Chris Shoemaker has decided that the story hour will be “deferred.” Rye resident Joie Cooney has started an online petition to reinstate the story hour. Cooney said the library board of directors gave in to protesters pressure “behind closed doors” and scrapped the event. GLAAD spokesman Rich Ferraro called the library’s decision “ill-informed.”
