Tyler Buchanan writes: “The first public library in the U.S. named for Martin Luther King Jr.—and the architect who designed it—have been honored in Columbus, Ohio’s King-Lincoln Bronzeville neighborhood as a critical part of the state’s history. An East Side library branch was under construction when King was assassinated in April 1968. Shortly after, library trustees renamed it after the civil rights leader.” A new branch, also named for King, was opened in the neighborhood in 2018, and a historical marker honoring the original location, architect Leon Ransom Jr., and the King family’s contributions to the neighborhood and the library system was installed in April 2023.
