Johns, Rafael Seek ALA Presidency; Kornblau, Neal Are Treasurer Candidates

Sara Kelly Johns, school library media specialist for grades 6–12 at Lake Placid (N.Y.) Middle/High School, and Molly Rafael, recently retired as director of Multnomah County Library in Portland, Oregon, are candidates for the 2011–12 presidency of the American Library Association.

Running for ALA treasurer are Alan Kornblau, director of Delray Beach (Fla.) Public Library, and James Neal, vice president for information services and university librarian at Columbia University in New York City. The committee also approved a roster of 81 candidates for the Association’s governing Council.

Petition candidates for president, treasurer, and Council have until 9 a.m. Central time on January 29, 2010, to enter the race. The Nominating Committee’s slate will appear in American Libraries, with petition candidates published as their names become available. The names of all candidates will also be posted on the ALA website.

Electronic ballot information will be transmitted to all ALA members with valid e-mail addresses who are current as of January 31, 2010. Current ALA members without valid e-mail addresses on file will receive materials by mail. Those who prefer to vote by paper ballot may contact the Member and Customer Services department at 800-545-2433 and press 5, or e-mail; Membership. Candidates’ campaign statements will appear in the March 2010 issue of AL. Voting begins March 16, 2010.

Nancy Allen, dean and director of the University of Denver’s Penrose Library, chaired the nine-member Nominating Committee.
