Children’s Ebooks Come up Missing: December Ebook Report from DCL

December 5, 2012

For the December ebook report, Douglas County (Colo.) Libraries looked at availability of books the top 10 New York Times Children’s Chapter Books list. The mix of fiction and nonfiction on the list reveals the problem of trying to force a move towards digital content. In this case, 40% of the books are simply not available in any electronic format. Not even for consumers. OverDrive has one of the books, while 3M’s platform does slightly better with three books available for libraries. The increased offerings from 3M are thanks to its picking up Penguin books, albeit with a rather unsavory license with a built-in one-year kill switch on the ebooks.
