Maurice D. Leach Jr., 91, head librarian at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia, from 1968 to 1985, died March 21. During his tenure Leach oversaw construction of the Leyburn Library, which opened in 1979, and the relocation of 150,000 books in a single day from the old facility. He served as 1975-76 president of the Virginia Library Association, which honored him for contributions to the VLA and the profession in 1977 and 1985. Before joining Washington and Lee, Leach held library positions at Texas College of Arts and Industries in Kingsville, the Department of State, and the United States Information Agency in Egypt, Lebanon, and Washington, D.C., He also headed the department of library science at the University of Kentucky from 1959 to 1966.
