With Americans turning to libraries in record number for employment resources and technology support, the nation’s libraries marked National Library Week, April 11-17, with exhibits, programs, and activities celebrating libraries and community and cultural centers. Libraries nationwide contributed photos to American Libraries, which we collected here.

Bestselling author Neil Gaiman, National Library Week honorary chair, kicked off the festivities with a live internet event, coordinated by the American Library Association”s Campaign for America’s Libraries and Jessamine County (Ky.) Public Library.

Other events during the week included: Release of “The State of American’s Libraries” report by ALA President-Elect Roberta Stevens; celerbation of National Library Workers Day April 13; the first National Bookmobile Day April 14; and Support Teen Literature Day April 15.

In additon to NLW, many school libraries also celebrate the month of April as School Library Media Month.

A motivational speaker, Burns seeks to challenge society's toward blindness.
Actor and humanitarian Danny Glover takes questions from children at the District of Columbia Public Library''s Beinning Neighborhood branch to raise awareness about the role library for children and for communities. Glover's visit celebrated National Library Week and served to help the Lubuto Library Project in an effort to build new libraries in Zambia.
