ProQuest, Thomson Reuters, among Software Industry Award Winners
The Software and Information Industry Association, the principal trade association for the software and digital content industries, announced the winners of the CODiE Awards for products and services January 27. Among the winners were a number of prominent library vendors, including ProQuest and Thomson Reuters.
Presented at a special event held in conjunction with the 2010 Information Industry Summit in New York City, the awards advance “the important role participating companies play in the digital economy,” said SIIA President Ken Wasch, “by providing recognition of the best new technology products and services.”
ProQuest took the “Best Online General Reference Service” award for ProQuest Central, which it launched in 2008 and claims to be the world’s largest aggregated full-text database. Thomson Reuters nabbed the “Best Video Content Aggregation Service” prize for Reuters Insider, while Dow Jones nabbed the “Best Online Professional Financial Information Service” award for Dow Jones Investment Banker, and Business and Legal Resources took “Best Online Government Information Service” for HR.BLR.com.
Dow Jones Enterprise Media Group took the award for “Best Content Aggregation Service” for Factiva.com, while Highbeam Research won “Best Online Consumer Information Service” for Encyclopedia.com. Also named winners were: A.D.A.M. with “Best Medical and Health Information Product” for Medzio; Alacra with “Best Online Business Information Service” for Alacra Pulse, Jigsaw with “Best Online Directory and Business Leads Service” for www.jigsaw.com, Knovel Corporation with “Best Online Science or Technology Service” for www.knovel.com, Cision with Best Social Media Aggregation Service” for Cision Social Media Dashboard, Collexis with “Best Solution Integrating Content into Workflow” for Collexis Reviewer Finder, and WILL Interactive with “Best Workforce Training Solution” for Danger Close.
ProQuest CEO Marty Kahn noted in a news release in response to the award, “ProQuest’s goal is to consistently innovate and make all kinds of research easier, more productive and more accurate. To have a panel of our industry peers recognize ProQuest Central as the best of the year—especially given the quality of the other finalists—is wonderful affirmation of our progress toward that goal.”

The only mention of libraries in “The Creativity Crisis” by Po Bronson and Ashley Merryman (Newsweek, July 19, 2010), an article that supports the concept of learning through creative problem-solving and holds up the National Inventors Hall of Fame School, a new public middle school in Akron, Ohio, as an example.
