The Library as Studio

Richland Library Main, Columbia, South Carolina

Located in the center of Columbia’s business, university, and entertainment district, Richland Library Main was designed using a “library as studio” model, where ideas and creativity are fostered in public and private spaces. In addition to traditional stacks, the library includes an art gallery, café, performance space, gathering areas, reading nooks, makerspace, coworking and business centers, and garden.

Jeremy Schwartz writes: “Weeks after winning a Granbury (Tex.) Independent School District board seat [in 2021], Courtney Gore immersed herself in the district’s curriculum. She was searching for evidence of the sweeping national movement she had warned on the campaign trail was indoctrinating schoolchildren. After taking office and examining hundreds of pages of curriculum, Gore was shocked by what she found—and didn’t find. The pervasive indoctrination she had railed against simply did not exist. Children were not being sexualized, and she could find no examples of critical race theory, an advanced academic concept that examines systemic racism.”

ALA writes: “We’re deeply saddened by the news of Satia Marshall Orange’s passing. A true legend in our profession, she profoundly influenced countless lives. Her work for the ALA Office for Literacy and Outreach Services (now the Office for Diversity, Literacy, and Outreach Services) and her relentless advocacy for equity, diversity, and inclusion in librarianship inspired the creation of an endowment to support the ALA’s Spectrum Scholarship Program. American Libraries recounts that she once recalled what her father (a librarian and ALA Councilor) told her years ago about librarianship, “This was a profession that has a national and international impact.” Her remarkable contributions to the field certainly proved his words to be true.”

Rosie Newmark writes: “Liz Kristan wanted to bring four-legged friends to patrons who needed them the most. Kristan, outreach services coordinator at Ela Area Public Library in Lake Zurich, Illinois, knew that the presence of pets has been associated with health benefits like reductions in stress and blood pressure. In 2022, she introduced robotic pets to the library’s collection, taking them on visits to assisted living and memory care facilities to entertain older adult residents.”

Karin Greenberg writes: “There’s something about reciting a memorized poem that induces calm and shuts out the rest of the world for a few seconds. During National Poetry Month in April, I focused on this often forgotten activity. After putting together a display of poems by various poets, I posted them in a Canvas announcement titled ‘April Poetry Challenge.’ Most students who come into the library during lunch or free periods want to relax or do work. With the lure of a gift card, though, I got dozens of participants.”

Becky Spratford writes: “We are less than two weeks away from Memorial Day, the unofficial start of summer. Summer Reading lists will start coming fast and furious, so best to get ready now. We know that some lists [such as those from Publishers Weekly] are meant to generate excitement about books that are coming soon, but the average reader does not understand that they are not out yet. If they see a book on a list, they expect you to have it. We need to be ready in a couple of key ways.”

Yet, as I grow as a reader and writer, I see the potential between the cracks: a chance to insert myself into my culture’s history. It is inevitable that myth will mutate with time. Kara Arundel writes: “A newly issued federal rule to ensure web content and mobile apps are accessible for people with disabilities will require public K–12 and higher education institutions to do a thorough inventory of their digital materials to make sure they are in compliance, accessibility experts said. The update to regulations for Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act, published April 24 by the US Department of Justice, calls for all state and local governments to verify that their web content—including mobile apps and social media postings—is accessible for those with vision, hearing, cognitive and manual dexterity disabilities.”
