Council Ends Session Early; Cheers Preliminary Attendance Figures

June 27, 2010

The American Library Association's governing Council tackled a full agenda in record time during its first session and cheered the preliminary figures that might signal a second-in-row record-breaking conference.

Executive Director Keith Michael Fiels reported that as of Saturday, June 26, total attendance was 25,444, compared with 27,353 during the same time for the 2009 Annual Conference in Chicago. That figure includes 6,558 exhibitor registrants.

Council unanimously passed the 2011–2015 Strategic Plan,  as amended, that outlines core organizational values, key action areas, and goals and objectives (CD#36.2), and a resolution reaffirming equal employment opportunity for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender librarians and library workers (CD#43).

A resolution to insure equitable access to all formats of electronic content through libraries was referred to the Budget Analysis and Review Committee and may be reintroduced in subsequent sessions during Annual (CD#45).

Convening as the ALA–Allied Professional Association, the ALA–APA Council heard a report from Executive Director Fiels about the receipt of a $590,000 Institute of Museum and Library Services grant.

"I am pleased to report that APA will have a positive financial result this year with a net positive of $25,000," ALA-APA Treasurer Rod Hersberger said.

He also recommended, and Council approved, a FY2011 budgetary ceiling of $243,878 (APACD#4.2).
