
American Library Association (ALA) President Lessa Kananiʻopua Pelayo-Lozada called the second Council meeting of ALA’s 2023 Annual Conference and Exhibition in Chicago to order at 9:07 a.m. on June 25. The agenda for Council III (CD#8.7) was adopted.
Andrew Pace, chair of the Committee on Organization (COO), provided an update on the committee (CD#27.1) and introduced the following action items:
- Modify the charge of the ALA Conference Committee
- Modify the name, charge, and composition of the ALA Council Orientation Committee
Both motions carried.
Toni Negro, chair of the Policy Monitoring Committee (PMC), proposed two amendments to the ALA Policy Manual (CD#17.1), which were approved by Council.
Erin Berman and Sara Dallas, co-chairs of the Core Values Taskforce (CD#34), shared an update on the work of the taskforce and requested an extension until 2024 to complete their work. The motion was approved.
ALA councilor Jessamyn West presented a resolution that ALA Bylaws Article VII Section 2 be amended by striking “may be held virtually” and inserting “shall be held virtually.” The motion to refer this to the Bylaws Committee was approved.
A Resolution Condemning Discrimination against Library Workers and Supporting the LGBQTIA+ Community (CD#58) was put forth by ALA councilor Erin Berman. The motion was approved.
ALA Executive Director Tracie D. Hall announced a conference attendance total of 15,706.
